The Story Behind Teen Health Insight

Why I Built This

When my kids were diagnosed with chronic conditions, I did what any parent would — I went looking for information. And what I found was either written for adults, buried in medical jargon, or so oversimplified it felt like it was made for a five-year-old. Nothing spoke to my teens. Nothing helped them feel confident about managing their health on their own.

That’s why I created TeenHealthInsight. This is a space where teens and tweens with chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, and IBD can learn about their health in a way that’s real, clear, and actually made for them. Not watered down. Not overwhelming. Just honest, reliable information designed to help young people take charge.

Because managing a chronic condition isn’t just about following instructions from your doctor — it’s about understanding your own body, making informed choices, and building the confidence to speak up for yourself. And this site is here to help you do exactly that.

And here’s the thing — I’m a doctor. If I was struggling to find the right resources for my own kids, what were other families going through?

Who I am

Hi, I’m Maria Ditter, Dr.med, MPH.

I’m a physician, a public health researcher, and a mom of three — and I live with a chronic condition myself. Two of my kids do too, which means our family knows firsthand what it’s like to juggle regular appointments, daily medications, ongoing therapy, and everything that comes with managing health while also just trying to live your life.

I trained as a physician in Germany, where I also completed my doctoral thesis in mental health at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. During my medical training, I worked in hospitals in Germany, the UK, France, and New Zealand. I later earned my master’s in public health from the University of Liverpool, with my thesis focusing on maternal health — including research at the Los Angeles Department of Public Health. I’ve also worked in health policy research at UCLA, evaluating health programs across California.

But honestly? The biggest thing that shaped this project wasn’t a degree — it was sitting at the kitchen table with my kids, trying to explain their conditions in a way that made sense to them, and realizing that the resources just didn’t exist.
