CHAPTER 16 · DAILY MANAGEMENT

TIPS TO REMEMBER MEDICATION

Easy ways to stay on track with checks and daily diabetes meds.

Taking your medication and checking your blood sugar regularly is what keeps things steady — but with school, sports, and friends, it’s easy to forget. Here are some simple tricks to help you stay on track.

Smart reminders

Three small habits that make a big difference.

👀 Keep it in sight

  • Place oral diabetes medication somewhere you’ll see it daily.
  • Keep your pump or finger-prick supplies somewhere visible (like the bathroom counter).
  • For more on the medications themselves, see Chapter 12: Insulin & Medication.

⏰ Set alarms

  • Phone alarms work well for blood-sugar checks.
  • Especially helpful around social events and before bed.
  • Name the alarm something specific (“check BG”, “long-acting”) so you don’t snooze on autopilot.

🗒️ Use sticky notes

  • Place notes on your bathroom mirror or desk.
  • Useful reminders for changing infusion sets or pumps.
  • Also great for rotating injection sites.

📦 Quick storage reminder

  • Opened insulin can stay at room temperature, away from sunlight.
  • Unopened insulin belongs in the fridge.

Pair with routines

Stack the habit onto something you already do.

🔗 Habit stacking

Tie your blood-sugar test or your dose to something you already do every day — it makes the habit stick.

  • Check your levels before meals when you wash your hands.
  • Take medication when you brush your teeth.
  • Plug in your phone at night next to your supplies, so they’re together in the morning.
