Traveling with Asthma
Traveling with asthma or spending time in public spaces can be stressful, but with a few precautions, it becomes easier to relax and enjoy the experience.
Preparation
Before Vacation
- Talk with your doctor or medical team about taking extra medication in case of a flare-up.
- Double-check the medication supply and pack one extra week’s worth.
- Check with your medical team about any travel-related risks and whether your asthma action needs updating for the trip.
- Get a letter from your physician allowing you to carry medication along.
- Pack a copy of your asthma action plan.
While Traveling
- Keep your medication close, in your hand luggage, not checked baggage.
- Take your medication everywhere while at the destination.
- Bring your peak flow meter with.
- Take precautions if your asthma is allergy related.
- Avoid known triggers.
- pack an allergy-proof pillow
- ask not to be seated near animals
- avoid peak pollen season
- request a non-smoking hotel room
- use air conditioning in the car
- Avoid known triggers.
- Consider packing a mask when exposure to allergens cannot be avoided.
- On flights, drink plenty of water as the cabin air can be very dry.
- Use the air vent above your seat for better airflow when flying.
- Make sure others in the travel group know about your asthma and have access to the asthma action plan.
- Do not travel if your asthma is not stable!
