If you’re concerned that you or your friend/sibling may be experiencing depression, has suicidal thoughts and could be at risk of self-harm or suicide, here’s what you can do:

  • – Have a direct conversation with your friend/sibling and ask, “Are you thinking about suicide or harming yourself?”
  • – Listen to what your friend/sibling has to say without interrupting
  • – If necessary, call 911 or text TALK to speak with a trained crisis counselor. This can be done by you or your friend/sibling
  • – Another option is to call 988, a specific suicide and crisis lifeline available 24/7
  • – If you feel you prefer an online chat, you can use this link which is open 24/7
  • – For those who are hearing impaired, you can call 800-799-4899
  • – If you prefer talking or texting with teen listeners for support (6pm-10pm daily), call 800-852-8336 or text TEEN to 839863
  • Specific support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) adolescents between 13-24yrs you can also call 866.488.7386 or text 678678 (https://trevorproject.org/webchat)
  • If there is an immediate risk of self-harm or suicide, stay with your friend/sibling until professional help arrives. Remove anything potentially harmful such as medications and sharp objects.
