Disease Origin

Anxiety disorders don’t have a single cause, and often, the exact disease origin remains unknown.

These disorders usually stem from a complex mix of factors. Researchers believe that anxiety results from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, socioeconomic, psychological, developmental, and health-related factors.

  • Genetic or Biologic Factors
    • Children and adolescents whose parents have anxiety disorders are at a higher risk, especially if both parents are affected. Twins where one twin has an anxiety disorder are also at an increased risk.
    • Anxiety disorders are more common among females than males.
  • Environmental and Socioeconomic Factors
    • Traumatic life events or adverse experiences during childhood, such as losing parents, parental divorce, abuse, or neglect, can raise the risk of developing anxiety disorders. Increased use of social media and online content as well as Cyberbullying increases the risk of anxiety disorders.
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has been identified as a risk factor for various mental health disorders among children and adolescents.
  • Psychological and Developmental Factors
    • Some studies suggest that parental overprotection contributes to the development of anxiety disorders.
  • Medical Conditions
    • Individuals with certain diseases or disabilities may find managing their conditions and life challenging, raising their risk of anxiety disorders.

While many factors contribute to the development of anxiety disorders, some factors can reduce their impact:

  • School Programs: Programs that teach social and emotional skills and positive coping strategies are highly beneficial.
  • Public and Parental Education: Parental education about anxiety, including recognizing signs, how to help and seek support, is crucial.
  • Parenting Styles: Warm, sensitive, consistent parenting fosters autonomy, helping children’s sense of control. Research suggests individuals with anxiety or depression may feel learned helplessness, but supportive parenting counteracts this.
